Preview Background Patterns Directly on Your Website

Finding a good background pattern for your website can be a time consuming process. SubtlePatterns offers hundreds of tillable texture patterns, free of charge. It’s the first website I am using when I have to look for a background to setup on any of my websites.

Brad Jasper’s SubtlePatterns Bookmarklet lets you preview hundreds of great patterns directly on your website, speeding your productivity considerably. The bookmarklet opens a small widget that lets you change the current website’s background.

By default, the background pattern is applied to the <body> element, though you can use the background selector tool to change this. A Chrome extension is also available.

The Grinch Who Stole Data: Don’t forget to protect it!

Every one of us waits throughout the year to celebrate the festivities of winter season, especially the Christmas with our loved ones. So what will you do this year to save your Christmas from the evil clutches of the Grinch? Don’t forget to protect your data. Your personal and official data can be at the mercy of tech Grinch who can play mischief with your data, while you are having a great time with your family. This year the Grinch and its accomplices have been quite busy, playing havoc with your computer system and stealing away your data – successful at every attempt they made. Better to be cautious than sorry later. While you plan for the next year this Christmas, make sure you include data protection in them.

Burned by GoDaddy? How to Find New VPS Hosting on the Web

What can a small business website owner do when its vendor’s services do not perform as promised, leading to a loss of revenue?

When GoDaddy’s servers went down for most of a Monday in September, website owners everywhere grumbled about lost sales, missed revenues, uncertain orders and more. Thousands of web users, both domain customers of GoDaddy and GoDaddy’s own web hosting and email services, were impacted throughout the day, according to PC World.

Weeks afterwards, the repercussion to this downtime in promised web service came in the form of a class action lawsuit, filed by a frustrated website owner who runs the site StatedIncomeIsBack.com. The lawsuit estimated that more than 1 million people might have been similarly affected by the fallout from GoDaddy’s outage. Whether this case will include all those web accounts remains to be seen, but certainly GoDaddy’s half-stab at reconciliation (30 percent discount on domain renewals) didn’t do enough.

Reduce PNG Files Size & Preserve Full Alpha Transparency: TinyPNG

Website speed is important nowadays, for both the visitor and in the eyes of search engines. Reducing the size of the images is one of the first steps a webmaster should take when he starts making his websites load faster.

I usually use Yahoo! Smush.it to reduce the size of the images without changing their look or visual quality. However, for compressing PNG image files I’ve found a better tool called TinyPNG.

This online tool uses smart lossy compression methods to decrease the file size of your PNG files. By precisely decreasing the number of colors from the image, less bytes are necessary to store the data. The result is virtually invisible but it makes a substantial difference in file size!
